The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), our regulatory body, has changed the guidance vets have to follow regarding prescription only medicines (POM) that we prescribe.
This includes some worm and flea treatments such as Moxiclear, Milpro and Nexgard, these can now only be prescribed after a physical, clinical examination by a vet. (We also sell over the counter flea and worm treatment that can be purchased without seeing the vet)
During the medication check/consultation the vet will update the pets clinical records to state the particular flea or worm medication that is to be used (and for how often and for how long -usually 12months before next check-up).
The new guidance also requires that a physical examination of the pet has to be performed every time any antibiotics, antifungals or antivirals are prescribed. This includes topical preparations such as ear and eye drops.
